Novell Open Enterprise Server
Novell® is pleased to announce the availability of Open Enterprise Server to all customers worldwide. With Novell Open Enterprise Server, Novell provides its award-winning networking services on both the Linux and NetWare platforms. Businesses can now migrate to Linux with minimal disruption to their IT infrastructures and run industry-leading applications on a premier commercial-grade Linux operating system, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server.
Product Description
Novell Open Enterprise Server is a suite of networking services that provides proven networking, communication, and collaboration and application services in an open, easy-to-deploy environment. Unlike other server platforms, which force vendor lock-in or are not sufficiently supported for the enterprise-level customer, Open Enterprise Server incorporates the best from both open source and enterprise networking leaders. Open Enterprise Server combines NetWare®, the trusted leader for secure networking services, and SUSE® LINUX, a leading open platform for delivering business-level applications. With the two combined, you get common management tools, identity-based services and an entire ecosystem of support backed by Novell.
• All current NetWare services, the NetWare kernel and new enhancements under development
• All SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 services developed around the latest 2.6 kernel (Intelbased x86 platform)
• Integrated common management tools to allow coexistence and management of platforms Novell Open Enterprise Server also includes technologies beyond those available in standard Linux distributions. It combines productivity-enhancing tools (such as Novell iFolder®), industryleading security solutions (such as advanced authentication support), high-availability clustering services and other key features. And if you're looking for an exit strategy from restrictive Microsoft* technologies, Novell Open Enterprise Server and its easy-to-use migration tools provide the foundation for a compelling server-to-desktop alternative.
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 is included in Novell Open Enterprise Server and provides excellent support for both commercial and open source applications. SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 is supported by over 1,000 applications from more than 300 software vendors. Hardware and application support is available from many ISVs and IHVs, including BEA, Computer Associates, Dell, EMC, HP, IBM, McAfee, Oracle, SAP, Veritas, VMware and many others. Open source has exploded in popularity and, as a result, in the number of applications (literally thousands) available today.
Novell Open Enterprise Server delivers a common set of networking services that can be deployed on either the NetWare or SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server operating systems. Services like Novell Clustering, eGuide, iFolder, iPrint, NetStorage, Storage Services, Virtual Office and others work on both Linux and NetWare. IDC predicts that Linux market share will jump from 24 percent today to 33 percent by 2007, showing that enterprises are feeling confident deploying Linux in their environments. The advanced networking services in Open Enterprise Server provide even further proof that Linux is a viable platform for enterprise use.
Novell Open Enterprise Server is built with installation and management tools that make it easy to configure and manage a mixed environment—or to migrate completely to a Linux environment. Updated versions of familiar NetWare tools now have the capability to simplify the installation and management not only of NetWare, but also of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
Additionally, Novell Open Enterprise Server includes the popular open source Yet another Setup Tool (YaST) installation and management tool, providing even more flexibility for deploying and configuring servers. Common management tools that NetWare administrators know are the same tools they can now use to manage Linux in their environments.
Key Benefits
Novell Open Enterprise Server provides both NetWare and SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server operating systems, enabling customers to run the essential Novell networking services on either platform—or on both. SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 is a secure, reliable platform for opensource computing in the enterprise. Novell has 20-plus years of networking-service expertise built into its award-winning NetWare platform. This platform provides advanced file, print and networking services in a secure, scalable and reliable environment. For customers running a NetWare environment today, Novell Open Enterprise Server provides an opportunity to add Linux to the corporate computing environment without any discernible change to end-user productivity.
Novell Open Enterprise Server allows NetWare and Linux services to co-exist in the enterprise and effectively provides crossover management and configuration between the two operating systems.
Management Scalability
Novell Open Enterprise Server supports the enterprise need for administration scalability and access control of file, print, applications, collaboration, security and storage. Open Enterprise Server provides the following benefits:
• Centralized management of services. Manage multiple servers and services at a time through centralized, browser-based management tools.
• Delegated administration. Delegate administration authority to others in the organization who are owners of various services. This allows IT staff to focus on more strategic initiatives.
• Group-based administration. Policy-based administration simplifies management and relieves the workload of having to manage one individual or server at a time.
• Proactive management and monitoring of services. Keep tabs on your server infrastructure and services so you can spot potential situations before they become truly problematic
Global Security
Novell Open Enterprise Server provides identity-based services and common management tools for controlling, securing and administering the enterprise:
• Global identities. Create global identities for users and the distributed services they access.
• Centrally-managed security policies. Eliminate potential security issues in a distributed environment. Policy-based security allows you to set the standard for access and security control but also gives you flexibility to adjust for specific needs.
• Granular access control to data and services. Advanced authentication helps provide further levels of security, yet support for common LDAP means users still get the information they need.
• System and service reliability. Novell is known for system and service reliability, expertise now available through Open Enterprise Server.
End-user Productivity
Novell Open Enterprise Server extends rich services to both Windows* and Linux workstations and delivers the distributed foundation for a complete Linux-based server-to-desktop alternative.
Open Enterprise Server provides:
• Rich access delivered to the enterprise desktop. File and print services are supported on either a Windows or Linux desktop
• End-user self-help tools. End users can effortlessly back up their own personal information, locate and install printers and even create, organize and manage their own online team environments.
• Global end-user access to networked services. Regardless of location, users can remain productive as they have access to file, print and collaboration services from anywhere.
• Easy use. Hide the complexity from end users. A network infrastructure with Open Enterprise Server at its foundation means end users have easy access and tools that allow them to be productive without having to be proficient in IT skills.
Deployment Agility
Novell Open Enterprise Server is designed to plug in and solve a particular set of problems within an IT environment. You have the ability to choose from a number of common deployment scenarios to make the network more productive, more quickly. Open Enterprise Server makes Linux* deployments accommodating and responsive to constant changes related to company mergers/acquisitions, changes in personal/organization, changes in company direction/strategy and changes in technology. Open Enterprise Server provides the following:
• Coexistence and migration tools. Create the right mix of platforms within your organization and migrate at your own pace.
• Deployment tools. Simplify deployment through dedicated pattern deployments of preconfigured services.
• Flexible and extensible management tools. Use browser-based management tools to support enterprise-wide deployments of Open Enterprise Server.
• Cross-platform and multi-platform identity integration tools. Utilize additional tools available from Nsure Identity Manager.
Business Continuance
Business continuance is the topic of many board meetings today. Government mandates are forcing organizations to pay particular focus to how they will ensure that services are always up and running. Insurance organizations are penalizing companies that don't have a disasterrecovery plan in place. Novell Open Enterprise Server helps organizations ensure that critical systems and data are always available through the following:
• High availability. In Open Enterprise Server, you can deploy any number of two-server clusters. Additional nodes can be added through the licensing of additional clusters, up to 32 servers in a cluster.

• Backup. Integrated backup capabilities and support for numerous third-party backup solutions ensure that your data is current, secure and available when you need it.
• Browser access to tools. Both end users and administrators have browser-based access to the tools they need to be effective. End users can be productive in the event they have to work from home or another location, and IT staff can access, monitor and administer the network from any browser location.

Licensing
Novell Enterprise Server is licensed per-user. The definition of “user” can be found in the EULA
http://www.novell.com/licensing/eula/.
Qualifying Competitive Upgrade Products
Customers upgrading from a qualifying competitive product will be able to upgrade on a one-toone basis. Customers upgrading from a competitive product purchase licenses at the upgrade price as if they were upgrading from an earlier version of NetWare.
Qualifying competitive products include:
● Microsoft Windows NT4
● Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
● Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
● Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
● Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
● Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
● Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition
● IBM OS/2 Warp Server
● SCO UnixWare 7
● Redhat Enterprise Linux AS
● Redhat Enterprise Linux ES
Upgrading from previous NetWare versions :
Customers upgrading from a qualifying Novell product (previous NetWare versions) will upgrade to Open Enterprise Server user licenses on a one-to-one basis.
i) Upgrading from previous NetWare versions that are user-based: Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server from previous versions of NetWare that are licensed per user will upgrade on a one-to-one basis. For example, a company with a 50-user NetWare 6.0 license would purchase a 50-user Open Enterprise Server upgrade license.
ii) Upgrading from previous NetWare versions that are site-based (CLA only): Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server from previous versions of NetWare that are licensed per workstation (site) will upgrade on a one-to-one basis. For example, a company with a 50-user NetWare 6.0 license would purchase a 50-user Open Enterprise Server upgrade license.
Customers who remain as CLA site contracts will continue according to the terms of their contracts.
iii) Upgrading from previous NetWareversions that are server-concurrent connection
(SCON) based:
The licensing model for NetWare 5.1 and earlier versions of NetWare were licensed by Serverconcurrent connection (SCON), which required a license for every server connection a device made. The User license in Open Enterprise Server tracks by object rather than connection, which can make the product easier to plan, deploy, and track. Each person who uses the software services needs a unique user object, which Open Enterprise Server will use to count licenses and usage. Customers who are licensed for NetWare 5.1 or earlier versions will upgrade on a one-toone basis, and will track usage by the User licensing model going forward. For example, a 25-Connection NetWare 5.1 license would upgrade to a 25-User Open Enterprise Server license.
In many instances, customers may need less User licenses than they need SCON licenses. For example, a single person who connects to three NetWare servers would need three licenses under the SCON licensing model (NetWare version 5.1 and earlier). This same person would normally only need a single User license for Open Enterprise Server. Under these circumstances, the customer may upgrade to a lower User license count than what they had under 5.1 or earlier SCON licenses. For example, a customer with a 100-Connection NetWare 5.1 SCON license may choose to upgrade to only a 50-User Open Enterprise Server license. This lowers the price of the upgrade, and also relinquishes the extra 50 licenses the customer had under SCON.
For questions on upgrading or the User license model, visit http://www.novell.com/licensing/oes_licensing.html
Upgrading from Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0
Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server from Novell Nterprise Linux Services version 1.0 will upgrade on a one-to-one basis for their User licenses. For example, a company with a 50-user Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 license would purchase a 50-user Open Enterprise Server upgrade license.
Licensing
Any Novell Open Enterprise Server customer will be eligible to receive patches via ZENworks Linux Management. These include patches to the SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server distribution and any of the Open Enterprise Server services.
Customers who do not purchase maintenance and upgrade protection will not be eligible to receive product updates. This includes updates to the Novell Open Enterprise Server services code (e.g. 1.0 to 1.1) or updates to the SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server distribution (e.g. 9.0 to 10.0).
Customers will receive codes to access patches via ZLM upon product registration.
For Customers who wish to deploy SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, there is a variable ratio that provides entitlement to receive patches for a specific number of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 servers per number of Open Enterprise Server end-user licenses.
For the first 50 Open Enterprise Server end-user licenses, the ratio is 1 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server per every 10 Open Enterprise Server licenses.
For the 51st Open Enterprise Server license and beyond, the ratio is 1 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server per 50 Open Enterprise Server licenses. For purposes of calculating the number of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server licenses, we will round up to the next level.
Examples:
20 Open Enterprise Server licenses 2 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Servers
21 Open Enterprise Server licenses 3 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Servers
100 Open Enterprise Server licenses 6 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Servers
101 Open Enterprise Server licenses 7 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server
5000 Open Enterprise Server licenses 104 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Servers

Linux?

http://www.novell.com/products/openente ... /eval.html

For Linux-based Open Enterprise Server evaluation customers: You will also see an evaluation activation code on this download page. Write this activation code down for use once Open Enterprise Server has been installed, in order to access software updates and patches for the 30-day evaluation period. The 30-day period begins once you receive the activation code.

For NetWare-based Open Enterprise Server evaluation customers: Install a pair of license key files included on the Product CD. These files expire after 90 days. Therefore, unless you have purchased the Open Enterprise Server product and installed a new license during the 90-day period, the system will begin generating messages to remind you to complete your purchase.

Для превращения версии в нормальную, читаем п.3 тут: http://www.novell.com/products/openente ... /eval.html
