NWAdmin NDS object Copy and Paste Snapin This NWAdmin snapin which allows a user to copy any NDS objects to a storage file and then paste (restore) them back to the same location or to other containers in the tree. This tool was developed this for a product which uses some complex NDS objects that may need to be copied to multiple locations in the same tree. You can paste the objects in the storage file to containers in other trees, however, there is an undesirable side-effect. If the tree structure in the second tree is different from that of the tree you copied the objects from, the objects are pasted to a container in the second tree, however, you will also note that the tree structure of the first tree is copied to the second tree as unknown objects. These unknown objects can be deleted using NWAdmin but this is annoying enough to recommend that the tool be used for same-tree operations only. We've had a number of customer requests for a tool that can be used to copy and paste Application objects, etc to other containers to avoid the work of recreating the objects. This tool appears to do the job (at least in testing). We offer this tool for your evaluation. Use the feedback links on the Toolkit to give us your feedback. Put NDS Object Copy in the Subject Line. You can also send comments to Novell_Consulting@novell.com. We will read all messages we get although we can not answer questions. Usage: Set up registry entry to allow NWAdmin to load the snapin. (For the snapin impaired...read on) Create the string value under : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NetWare\Parameters\NetWare Administrator\Snapin Object DLLs WINNT (WIN95 for Win95 platform) The string value name can be "CNPSNAP.DLL" and the value is the path to the snapin DLL. Usage in NWAdmin: Copy: 1. Highlight the objects you want to copy in NWAdmin browser. 2. Select "Copy Objects" from the NWAdmin Tools menu. 3. To accept the storage file name and copy the objects, click on OK. Paste: 1. Highlight the containers you wish to "paste" the NDS objects to. 2. Select "Paste Objects" from the NWAdmin Tools menu. (The objects to be pasted appear on the list control) 3. By default, the tool will paste the objects to their original locations. To allow the tool to copy the objects to the selected containers, remove the check from the "Paste Objects To Original Location". 4. Click on OK. Try deleting objects and pasteing them back from the storage file. This could be useful for restoring objects in a testing environment as well.
